What format should my USB be for USB Loader GX? ›

The Wii Homebrew Applications (such as The Homebrew Channel, Emulators, Games, Media players, etc.), USB Loader GX's NAND emulation feature and DIOS MIOS (Lite) require a FAT32 partition format. You can use a FAT32 SD/SDHC card for that purpose and set your USB hard drive as NTFS or Ext partition format.

General. If USB Loader GX says “Waiting for HDD…” with a 20 second countdown, it is very likely that it cannot detect your USB device. Try to exit out of the app, ensure your USB device is plugged into the bottom port if Wii is placed horizontally, or the port closest to the edge when the Wii is placed vertically.

Creating BIOS Disk

Note: Formatting will clear all data contained within the USB drive, and this step requires converting the USB format to FAT32. Using a USB flash drive with other system formats such as NTFS or exFAT will not allow you to update the BIOS.

Most USB flash drives will have a FAT32 file system out of the box. It is the most compatible file system for older/modern computers (PC and Mac), plus gaming consoles and other devices with a USB port. exFAT is the ideal file system for USB flash drives.

FAT32 is the best for any bootable USB drive, provided you don't want to transfer a single file over 4GB. Since bootable drives don't necessarily need to store large files, they can conveniently work on FAT32.
