Penny Chenery Early Life
Born in New Rochelle, New York, Penny Chenery grew up in Pelham Manor, New York. She was named ‘Helen Bates’ after her mother. In 1928, her father became a millionaire by founding utility companies. He also founded ‘Meadow Stable’ which was a stable where thoroughbred racing and horse breeding was carried out. It was operated in The Meadow in Carolina County, Virginia. Growing up, Chenery also loved horses and learned to ride when she was 5 years old.
Penny Chenery Education
Penny Chenery joined Madeira School situated in McLean, Virginia. She also became captain of the Equestrain Team when she was in her senior year. After graduating from Madeira in 1939, she went on to earn a Bachelor of Arts from Smith College. She majored in American Studies. Later, she attended Columbia Business School. In 2011, Chenery was also awarded an Honorary Doctor of Laws degree from Randolp-Macon College in Ashton, Virginia.
Penny Chenery Career and Life
Initially, Chenery worked as an assistant for Gibbs and Cox. Gibbs and Cox designed war craft and due to the urging of her brother Chenery left the job. She joined Red Cross. She traveled to France and helped soldiers’ transition to ships home when World War 2 ended.
In 1946, she returned from Europe and while attending Columbia Business School she met John Bayard Tweedy. Chenery dropped out of her MBA program and married Tweedy. The couple had 4 children.
Chenery lived a quite life until the death of her mother. In 1968, her father got really sick as well and Cherry overtook the responsibility of managing his Meadow Stable. She made changes and started working really hard. Chenery was able to turn the stable around. She along with Roger Laurin who trained and managed the horses at the stable started breeding some win worthy horses. However, Roger left the farm in 1971 and Chenery hired his father. Laurin Sr. and Chenery won 1972’s Kentucky Derby with the horse ‘Riva Ridge’. In doing so, she fulfilled her father’s lifelong dream. Her 2-year-old horse ‘Secretariat’ was named ‘American Horse of the Year’, that same year.
Secretariat went on to become the first triple crown winner in 25 years and set records that still stand in all three races. Both of Chenery’s horses were honored with being inducted in the National Museum of Racing and Hall of Fame.
Chenery continued to breed and race horses even after Secretariat. She achieved another great success with Saratoga Dew, who was the first New York bred horse to secure a win of an Eclipse Award.

In 2017, Chenery was 95 years old when she died of a stroke.
